The Story of Hannah , 1 Samuel 1:11; Luke 2:22-24; Galatians 4:1-5 | sermon by Father.Mungamuri Devadasu
Near the town of Ramah was Shiloh, where Elkanah, a devout man, would travel with his family to worship and pray to God. His wife, Hannah, was deeply sorrowful because she had no children.
Every
family experiences some form of sorrow. Though Elkanah and Hannah shared a
strong bond as husband and wife, grief still existed in their lives. However,
this sorrow was allowed by God. Nothing
happens without His will. Sometimes, He prevents hardships, and other
times, He allows them—but always provides a way of deliverance. Even seasons of
suffering can become times of great grace.
Elkanah,
being a godly man, comforted and supported his wife. Likewise, believers must support and uplift one
another.
Hannah’s Journey to Shiloh
One
day, Elkanah and his family travelled to Shiloh, bringing their offerings. True comfort is found in the presence of God. They went to Shiloh
for two main reasons:
- To worship the Lord.
- To offer sacrifices and gifts.
Whenever
we go to the house of God, we must remember these two purposes:
- Worshipping God wholeheartedly.
- Giving back to Him with gratitude.
Why
do we give offerings to God? Because
everything we have comes from Him. Our giving brings Him joy. Hannah
found great happiness in
offering her gifts at the temple.
No
matter our struggles or sorrows, we
must never stop going to the house of God. In His presence, we receive:
- Joy.
- Comfort.
Shiloh
did not have a magnificent temple, but it was still a sacred place of worship.
The priest Eli served there
along with his two sons. As mentioned in Psalm 23, Eli continually dwelt in the house of God.
Hannah’s Prayer
In
the temple, Hannah poured out her heart
before God, speaking only to Him. Her lips moved, but no sound came
out—she was praying silently. However, Eli misunderstood her and assumed she
was drunk. Even today, misunderstandings like this occur. When a prayerful believer intercedes
earnestly, others may misinterpret their actions. But we must not be discouraged by such misunderstandings. Hannah
remained steadfast in her faith, and in time, God answered her prayers.
Hannah’s Prayer and God’s Response
Hannah
prayed earnestly to the Lord, saying:
"O Lord of Hosts,
- Do not
forget me.
- Remember
me.
- Look
upon my suffering.
- If You
grant me a son, I will dedicate him to Your service."
Every
believer is given the opportunity to pour out their heart before God. Hannah
did just that—she laid her burdens before Him. As a result, she was filled with
great peace and joy. However, she did not yet know whether her prayer would be
answered.
Eli’s Assurance: - When
Eli, the priest, heard her concerns, he said, "Go in peace! May the Lord grant your request." These
words came from God through Eli. If we remember this assurance every time we
pray, we will find great comfort and joy. Hearing this promise, Hannah left with a joyful heart. She fully
trusted that God would fulfill her request.
The Birth of Samuel
In
due time, Hannah gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, meaning "The
Lord has heard my prayer." This name was a testament to God's
faithfulness. He had listened to her cry and granted her request, just as He
listens to all who sincerely seek Him.
Elkanah’s Family and Their Unity
Elkanah’s
family was characterized by deep unity. When Hannah said, “I will not go to Shiloh until I have weaned
the child,” Elkanah did not object. Instead, he responded with faith, “May the Lord establish His word.” The
birth of their son was a fulfilled promise, but another commitment remained—dedicating him to God’s service.
Hannah nurtured her son not for personal gain but for the Lord. Similarly,
mothers should raise their children with a heart dedicated to God’s purpose. If
one serves in a government position, they must do so with integrity and
dedication to their country. In all
aspects of life, Elkanah and Hannah stood in agreement as husband and wife,
making decisions together with faith and devotion.
Dedicating Samuel to the Lord
Once
Samuel was weaned, Hannah and Elkanah took him to the temple in Shiloh and
offered him in service to the Lord. With great faith, they left their beloved
son in the Lord’s hands and returned home. Some scholars argue that children born out of sorrow often struggle to
bring joy or success. However, Samuel’s life was a clear exception—he grew in wisdom, favor, and divine purpose,
bringing great joy.
Five
Key Stages in Hannah’s Journey
i.
A season of suffering –
God allowed trials, which ultimately became a time of grace.
ii.
A time of earnest prayer –
Hannah poured out her soul before the Lord.
iii.
The moment of promise –
God assured her through Eli that her request would be granted.
iv.
The time of fulfillment –
Hannah gave birth to Samuel.
v.
A life of service – Samuel
was dedicated to the Lord’s work, becoming a great prophet.
All
believers should turn to prayer and
service to overcome their struggles. Hannah’s journey was not just about
receiving a son—it was about reaching a stage where she focused entirely on
God, setting aside her personal desires.
Elkanah
once asked Hannah, “Am I not better to
you than ten sons?” In time, it became evident that Samuel was far more
valuable than ten sons. Likewise, the promise of Christ’s second coming is far greater than anything else in this
world.
Just
as Samuel was more precious than many
sons, Christ is above all things. Therefore, we must prepare our hearts
for His return and eagerly await Him. Those who remain steadfast in faith will
surely receive His grace and eternal
reward.
May the Lord, who is coming soon, bless all who are
prepared and waiting for Him. Amen.
