Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” Genesis 18:32
When Abraham heard about the destruction of Sodom, he
interceded with God. His prayer
was persistent, asking
repeatedly for mercy. At the end of his intercession, he said: "Let not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak just once more." Abraham spoke these
words at the end of
his prayer—when there was nothing more to ask for. But have we truly finished our
prayers?
- Have
you prayed only for yourself,
or have you interceded for others?
- There
are many
in the world who need our prayers—sinners,
the sick, the poor, and the troubled.
- Even
if they do
not ask, we are called to pray for them.
Interceding
for the World : Have you prayed for: Nations that
are suffering? Unbelievers
to come to salvation? Harvests
and economic stability? Hospitals,
Bible societies, mission organizations? Governments to
act justly? Peace
to replace wars and conflicts? New
concerns that God places on your heart?
Interceding
for Others is Just as Important as Praying for Ourselves: Prayer is
our duty,
whether we see immediate answers or not. Just as we pray for our own needs, we
must also intercede
for others. Praying for others is just as
important as praying for ourselves. Whenever we come across new events in the
news, we should pray about them. Regardless of whether our prayers are
answered, it is our duty to pray, and we must remain faithful to it.
Did God spare Sodom because of
Abraham’s prayer? He saved only Lot, but the city’s sins were not atoned for,
making its destruction inevitable. Deliverance from suffering requires a change
of heart—without true repentance, salvation is impossible. Therefore, we must
pray for people’s transformation. If even ten righteous individuals had been
found in Sodom, the city would have been spared. But since there were none, its
destruction was certain. However, we cannot say that Abraham’s prayer was
entirely unanswered. A small town was spared, and Lot was rescued—both of which
stand as evidence of God’s response to prayer.
Let this remind us that prayer is powerful,
but true change comes when people’s hearts turn toward God. So, let us
pray not only
for protection but for transformation! Amen!
